The acting minister of Industry and Commerce, Nooruddin Azizi, announced that various trade and economic agreements have been signed with Pakistan following a meeting with a Pakistani delegation.
Azizi said that in the two-day meetings with the Pakistani delegation, they agreed on coal and cotton exports, cross-border travel of drivers without passports, and resolving trade and transit challenges.

Calls for probe into letter by 6 IHC judges on ‘brazen meddling’ in judicial affairs

Calls emerged from various quarters on Wednesday for a probe into allegations made by six Islamabad High Court (IHC) judges against interference in judicial affairs by the country’s intelligence apparatus.
Amid the calls, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa summoned a full court meeting which is currently underway.
On Tuesday, six IHC judges — out of a total strength of eight — wrote a startling letter to the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) members, regarding attempts to pressure judges through abduction and torture of their relatives as well as secret surveillance inside their homes.

Gaza death toll rises

The death toll from Israel’s attacks on Gaza has risen to 32,782, the Health Ministry said in a statement, adding that 75,298 people have been injured since October 7.
The toll includes 77 people killed and 108 wounded in the past 24 hours.
In a recent airstrike, Israel bombed the tents of journalists and displaced people inside inside the walls of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, killing two persons.

US urges IEA to fulfill counter-terrorism commitments

The US State Department said that Washington is committed to ensuring that Afghanistan can never again be a launching pad for terrorism.
“We remain committed to ensuring that Afghanistan can never again be a launching pad for terrorism, and we continue to push the Taliban (Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan) to fulfill all of their counter terrorism commitments to the international community,” the department’s spokesperson Matthew Miller said at a news briefing in Washington.
He reiterated that the United States had clearly communicated to the IEA that it’s their responsibility to ensure that “they give no safe haven to terrorists, whether it be Al Qaeda or ISIS-K or any other terrorist organization”.

TAPI gas company CEO satisfied with the project’s progress

Murad Amanov, head of the Turkmenistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan–India (TAPI) Gas Pipeline project, expressed his satisfaction with the recent progress of the project and talked about the practical rollout of the project.
In a meeting with the Afghan minister of mines and petroleum, Shahabuddin Delawar, he briefed about the project. The ambassador of Turkmenistan in Kabul was also present in the discussion on the project.
Afghan Minister Shahab Delawar said that the preliminary work of TAPI is progressing quickly and that the pipeline will be put into operation in the near future.
TAPI is a natural gas pipeline being developed by the Galkynysh – TAPI Pipeline Company Limited with participation of the Asian Development Bank.
The pipeline will transport natural gas from the Galkynysh Gas Field in Turkmenistan through Afghanistan into Pakistan and then to India.

US says it doesn’t support Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project

The United States said on Tuesday that it does not support a Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline project from going forward and cautioned about the risk of sanctions in doing business with Tehran.
The Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline, known as the Peace Pipeline, opens a new tab, is a long-term project between Tehran and Islamabad, and has faced delays and funding challenges for several years. The pipeline would transport natural gas from Iran to neighbouring Pakistan.
Iran and Pakistan had signed a five-year trade plan in August 2023 and set a bilateral trade target at $5 billion.

24 Islamic Emirate Officials on UN Blacklist

The spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate called for the removal of the names of the Islamic Emirate officials from the United Nations Security Council, the United States, and the European Union blacklist.
The names of the Islamic Emirate officials have not only not been removed from the United Nations blacklist over the course of more than two and a half years, but more names have also been added to this list.
“More than 20 individuals are still on the blacklist, with three or four added, making a total of 24. This is not a positive step. The list should have been eliminated before,” Zabihullah Mujahid said.

PIA board approves privatisation plan amid IMF talks

The board of directors of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has approved the government’s plan to privatise the national flag carrier ahead of the country securing a new International Monetary Fund (IMF) loan programme, estimating to fetch $250-300 million through the sell-off likely to a Middle Eastern country.
Following its reconstitution on Friday, March 22, the board of directors convened its first meeting on Monday and committed to the government’s timeline to privatise PIA by June 15, 2024.
